Cardiologist Brandy Patterson has dedicated her career to helping others maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle. It was her clinical focus and passion for preventing cardiac disease among women that made her the perfect fit as our Club Red ambassador. Patterson grew up in a home with a father who played professional baseball and a mother who played professional racquetball, so it was only fitting for her to become involved in a profession that promotes health and wellness. She attended The Miller School of Medicine at University of Miami, completed an Internal Medicine residency at Allegheny General Hospital and did her Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at University of Florida. Patterson was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine in Cardiovascular Disease at University of Pennsylvania prior to joining University of Virginia Health System in 2014. Here, she not only cares for patients, but she is also actively involved in clinical research and participates in community outreach efforts to spread the word about the importance of living a heart-healthy lifestyle. "I became interested in cardiology because heart disease is a common, but serious condition that, in many cases, is preventable. As the Club Red clinical ambassador, I am in a position to open up the conversation about heart disease in women."
Katherine Basbaum is passionate about educating patients on the right nutritional solutions to combat a myriad of health issues. In her role as Clinical Dietitian for the UVA Heart and Vascular Center, Basbaum provides nutrition counseling and creates clinical treatment plans for patients with heart disease and other chronic conditions such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Basbaum received her master's degree in Nutrition Communication from Tufts University in Boston. During her graduate training, she enjoyed internships with both Eating Well and Cooks Illustrated Magazine, where she developed editorial content, analyzed recipes and performed nutrition research. Basbaum’s ability to communicate her nutrition knowledge, her enthusiasm for helping others achieve dietary goals and active participation in community events make her an invaluable part of the Club Red team. “I love being part of the Club Red community because every event has a great mix of familiar faces and newcomers.
